Responding to news on the Green Deal today Eric Lounsbury, Strategy Manager at the Carbon Trust said:
“The Green Deal could help overcome one of the key obstacles to improving the energy efficiency of homes and non-domestic buildings by providing upfront finance. However households and organisations need to be more strongly incentivised to take up the Green Deal offer. Among the options the Government should consider are discounts on business rates for improved energy efficiency, extending the proposed ban on F and G-rated buildings to cover owner-occupiers, and extending Display Energy Certificates to all large commercial properties in order to create transparency of building energy efficiency. Incentives such as these will be essential if the Green Deal is to realise its full potential.”

Earlier this year BASEC issued a safety warning regarding the quality of some 'arctic' cables.
"The British Approvals Service for Cables (BASEC) has issued a warning about some ‘arctic grade’ cable supplied into the UK market. This cable, usually coloured yellow or blue, is commonly used on construction sites and other outdoor applications for temporary power supplies, and in some indoor applications such as cold stores."
"BASEC independently tested samples of selected ‘arctic grade’ cables. The sheathing and insulation of certain cables were found to disintegrate when subjected to a cold bending test. This problem could result in a fire, short circuit or an electric shock. The products in question also exhibited poor conductor resistance and other faults."
In the recent cold weather we at ElectrAssure have been informed by some non-electrical contactors that poor quality arctic cable is still being sold and used.
We recommend that you only use branded quality cable supplied from electrical wholesalers. It's really not worth taking the risk with cheap cable.
See the BASEC web site for the full safety briefing.
